Marco Bitran - Teaching Tennis Without a Tennis Court

By

Visualize this; a class with a racket for everyone, more than enough tennis balls, a rolled up blue mat that stands about 3 ½ feet tall, Colored tape, and the honor system. What do you have? You have guessed it right, a tennis court. Sadly, tennis has been neglected in physical education and the reason is not because the teacher isn't Roger Federer. The reason is also not because teachers can't walk and chew gum when it comes to tennis. Fact that tennis has been used for only schools that provide appropriate equipment and facilities is irrational. There is no excuse just because a school doesn't have a tennis court, or it's raining, or not enough gymnasium space to hold a group of students from practicing the art of a forehand stroke and performing tennis serves like Andy Roddick.

Tennis can be introduced to any student that has the cognitive and psychomotor ability to strike a long-handed implement (a tennis racket in layman's terms). The only thing stopping students from exceeding their maximum proficiency is one word; Improvisation. I said it, don't break down and shake your head.

Improvisation. Does it need to be repeated again? This term separates a quality teacher from an educated teacher. This term also exemplifies how a teacher can "think on their feet" and adjust to obstacles.

Picture a school's tennis courts where students trying to have a rally is non-existent, take the fence where students have more fun hitting home runs over then playing the actual game. Finally, take the kids that are sitting out waiting to get on a court because there is not enough courts to provide for a class. Now let focus and put this image in your mind; use a wall (yes a wall) where students can hit the tennis ball off it and what's this? The ball comes back to them? They can also see how they doing based on how the bounce comes back off the wall? That's preposterous. Picture two hockey sticks taped together suspended by two chairs at the end of the sticks. What do you have? A simulated tennis net. That's crazy though, why would someone ever want to tape two hockey sticks together and grab two chairs and make a net? The people that ask themselves that question don't have improvisation.

If this sounds crazy to you, let's have another visualization; college students-ages 18-23 year old adults playing tennis, but not on a tennis court. With rolled up blue mats, colored tape, and the honor system, and a wall, the sight of college students feeling like professionals in a teaching curriculum based environment where teachers used improvisation to create a tennis court, to teach tennis, and the fundamentals of tennis was remarkable. Stations incorporated in a gym where using continental, eastern, and western grips, along with forehand and backhand strokes hitting tennis balls against a wall aided to student's ability to learn and have fun. Yes, that word no one wants to do-fun. Guess what incentive was needed for college students to hit the tennis ball against wall and self-check themselves along with the teacher evaluating their form? The incentive was a hula-hoop. Look at that, just a hula-hoop taped up against the wall or multiple hula-hoops at different levels against a wall and college students were enjoying themselves. The best part about all this, there were no NO. 2 pencils needed and a scantron to test their knowledge about the sport. There were no tennis courts needed to practice the sport of tennis. Just a gymnasium and modified equipment.

Last image for your head, take those college students that were having fun and put in students in elementary and/or secondary education in that kind of environment, and there will be no need for a test on tennis. Those teachers that use improvisation understand that if they coordinate activities no matter what obstacles face them, students increase their pulse from resting pulse, practice the proper cues, and look like they're having fun, then behold, teaching tennis without a tennis court.

Marco Bitran: Get the Surface That You Want With Synthetic Tennis Courts

By

The typical homeowner spends approximately 40 hours annually when it comes to managing their lawn.

While it's true that plenty of gardening buffs find this endeavor particularly satisfying, most people would rather opt for a cost-effective alternative that will enable them to move on toward more pressing matters concerning their household or business. Of course, there are plenty of lawn care companies and professionals who will gladly deal with the maintenance and development aspects of these gardens, but the costs associated with these types of services are not feasible enough in the long run, which is especially the case for businesses. On the other hand, the residential as well as entrepreneurial public has found a viable alternative in the form of synthetic grass systems. For the those who don't have enough knowledge of the matter, artificial turf services generally do not deviate much from conventional lawns in terms of visual appearance and suitability to the environment, although a ton of benefits as well as inherent practical applications in diverse varieties of terrain gradually becomes apparent upon closer inspection. Concurrently, artificial grass is responsible for improving gardens and level fields for homes, commercial properties with wide open spaces in need of eco-friendly surroundings, as well as befitting backdrops for sports-related activities such as synthetic tennis courts.

Organizations who're interested in developing synthetic tennis courts for academic or business purposes won't find any shortage among the network of artificial grass suppliers and installers anytime soon. Capable of withstanding intense environmental conditions plus strenuous exertions between players, synthetic tennis courts ensure the utmost reliability, longevity, and require hardly the same level of frustrating maintenance that is quite common for conventional athletic fields. Synthetic grass systems often provide features and components that most often result in improvements upon traction as well as stability, bolstered with the integration of safe, pebble-like granules contained within the field's infill. These default shock absorbers are nestled below the field's surface simultaneously acting as a cushion for the tract's inhabitants as well as granting it a natural feel in the same way that natural lawns do. Moreover, synthetic grass surface is made up of polyethylene and subsequently features safety components such as water or sand cushions for sections of the turf that haven't been filled, making the artificial grass carpet far more durable.

Artificial grass tennis courts are rapidly becoming more appealing for dedicated players who are still interested in playing despite odd weather conditions like winter or intense heat around the summer days. These synthetic grass systems are built to last for 10-15 years if installed properly. Professionals tasked to do this usually introduce items such as shock pads, rubber granules, wear-and-tear resistant adhesive tapes, sand or water infill and other materials essential to generating an impressive tennis court made up of artificial turf materials.

Marco Bitran: Getting Started With Tennis Courts Construction

By

Concepts behind construction often conjure up images of complex, coordinated machines and manpower functioning in unison in order to accomplish undertakings typically concerning the development of architectural, infrastructural, and other various industrial projects. Reaction to these huge projects often range from reverent fascination to utter aversion, mostly determined by who benefits from the construction as well as who suffers the most. On the other hand, construction companies have been steadily developing innovative services for the development of tennis courts for known organisations as well as private groups.

Free from the double-edged hype that continually dogs straightforward property building procedures, tennis courts construction projects offer distinct designing as well as terrain and material modifications that still adhere to the standard dimensions of a tennis court whilst catering to their respective client's preferences.

Typically regarded as irrefutable law by tennis players, officials and avid spectators, the dimensions of these tennis courts construction areas should be in accordance with the established rules, mainly 70 feet in length, with an accompanying width of 27 feet. Suitable adjustments for the expanses will also be arranged so as to ensure the utmost convenience for players who are interested in competing for singles or doubles matches, done by implementing noticeable markers reminding individual players of the custom dimensions important during play (27 feet in width for the former while 36 feet is enough for the latter). The ever present services lines retain their positions at precisely 31 feet from the net. Tennis supporters likewise have an unspoken agreement attesting to the fact that most rational tennis courts should be constructed so as to steer clear from distracting sun glare. In contrast, a more liberal approach is being permitted for the construction of audience seats and spectator stadiums.

Aside from strict adherences pertaining to the development of the tennis courts construction dimensions, complicated plans are likewise being assessed prior to applying any definite materials to serve as the court's bulk surfaces. Hard courts, usually made up of asphalt and other concrete materials, are substantially covered with layered, texture inflected rubber coatings in order to provide safety regulated cushions for players as well as imparting further improved bouncing physics for the ball. Routine maintenance is subsequently being conducted with the help of blowers or brooms. In contrast, natural trimmed grass surfaces or perhaps economically efficient synthetic turf surfaces are preferred by other players or organizations. These divergent opinions concerning the standard surfaces for contrasting associations and players mostly stem from the fact that some active participants feel more at ease and in control on some accustomed courts more than others. Official tournaments and competitions dispense of these handicaps and consequently avoid churning out more arguments by filtering various proceedings of tennis games throughout various surfaces as the competition progresses.

Marco Bitran: What a Beginner Should Look for in Personal Tennis Clothing and Equipment

By

Once you understand what is the correct and suitable personal attire for you to use, you are ready to embrace tennis training drills quicker. For example: What type of balls and shoes to use on certain court surfaces.

Learning the Different tennis court surfaces as a beginner means being aware of the bounce and flight speed with various types of tennis balls. For example a regular- duty felt ball is preferred on clay courts, while an extra- duty felt ball is popular on hardcourts.

TENNIS BALL: To maintain the perfect bounce of your balls, its best to keep them stored in sealed pressurized cans when not being used. A ball with a larger diameter than a standard tennis ball, is better suited for beginners, to aid in seeing the ball easily due to the slower flight path the larger ball takes.

TENNIS SHOE: Wearing the correct shoes is essential to your game's improvement and to remain injury-free. This is why the sport of tennis have their own unique tennis shoe style. Tennis shoes differ from conventional runners because of the constant lateral movement involved. The sole of a tennis shoe is purpose built to assist in this side-to-side movement.

TENNIS RACKET: To generalize, a racket that has a heavy frame will generate more power and vibrate less. A stiff framed racket has a greater sweet spot, although you will transfer the majority of the shock load to your arm, when hitting a ball. A flexible framed racket can decrease the shock load on your arms.

STRINGS: To decide on soft or tight tension of your tennis strings, will depend on your preferred choice of, if you want Power or Control. Soft tension gives you more Power, durability, feel and comfort. But the trade off is minimal control. With tight tension strings, you get maximum control only.

CLOTHING: The days of heavy cotton fabrics are fading. They are being replaced with light-weight breathable, even sweat resistant fabrics. These performance based shirts will keep players cooler, especially during long matches in direct sunlight. Nowadays men wear longer shorts and tighter body hugging shirts. Women these days are wearing tank tops and skirts. This allows you to move your limbs (arms and legs) backwards and forwards, side to side as well as any rotating motion in comfort and ease.

With some careful thought and planning you can quickly advance your learning ability when doing tennis drills or playing a game.

Marco Bitran: Tennis String Options and Information for the Summer Heat

Expert Author Eric Burke
By

Summer is by far my favorite time of the year. But for tennis strings summer is the worst time of the year. The hotter it is the quicker strings lose tension. As your strings become looser you have less control. Eventually you feel like you're hitting with a trampoline. Many shots you believe you have hit perfectly are out. I've always raised my tension as the temperature rises. For higher level players 2-3 pounds make a noticeable difference. But like everything else, string tension is a very individual choice. You may have to experiment a little before you find what works best for you.

There are strings that hold tension better than others. Polyester strings have become very popular in the U.S.

For the most part, they are very durable, spin enhancing, and control oriented. But they are notorious for how quickly they lose tension. The stiffer playing ones can also be pretty hard on the arm. I haven't found a poly string that holds tension for what I consider a long time. Here are a few that do better than most:

Genesis Black Magic is a softer playing polyester string with nice feel and power.

Genesis Twisted Razor is a sharp, 3-sided, twisted tennis string. Great spin enhancement.

Kirschbaum Spiky Shark is an 8-sided string that has a nice combination of feel, control, and spin enhancement.

For those of us who prefer strings with more feel, power, and comfort, durability can be an issue. That is not an issue with these strings:

Ashaway Mono Gut ZX is the string I play with when I'm not using natural gut. Along with great power and feel, Mono Gut ZX is very durable. The spin enhancement is a great bonus. There is no similar string available from any tennis string company.

Ashaway Dynamite is a rough textured multifilament. Great control and spin enhancement.

Gamma Live Wire XP is what I previously used when not playing with natural gut. Yes it's lively and powerful but what makes XP great is the Zyex outer wraps. Zyex gives XP a crisper more "gut like" feel. It also adds durability and helps with tension maintenance. (P.S. Zyex is the material used in Ashaway Mono Gut ZX and Dynamite)

Pro Supex Spiral Flex is a firmer but not stiff playing, solid core synthetic string. Good control and durability. This is a very nice string at a good price.

So although you may be a string breaking beast, there are plenty of durable strings available that won't break your arm. And ironically we just happen to have many of them at your friendly Hardcore Tennis store!

Eric Burke is the owner of Hardcore Tennis in Atlanta. He is Atlanta's 'go-to' guy for string and racquet expertise. He has played since childhood, Division I collegiate and has continued to play Southern & National tournaments.

• Extruded - This type of acrylic sheet undergoes a process wherein the liquid acrylic monomer is pressed on rollers to form sheets until it cools. The finished products are softer, can be easily scratched and may contain dirt and other impurities. However, extruded acrylic is more cost-effective and it is used by majority of industries.

• Cast - This acrylic type is more expensive but has higher quality. The process involves the liquid plastic being pressed between molds that are often made of glass. It then undergoes gradual heating process and series of water baths, creating solid acrylic with higher molecular structure.

Marco Bitran: Ultimate Guide In Building Synthetic Tennis Courts

By

Today, synthetic tennis courts are rising in popularity because of their durability, practicality and convenience.

For athletes and sports enthusiasts who want a low maintenance court without compromising performance level, a synthetic court may be right for you - they can stand unpredictable weather and they can be used all-year round.

Sports, such as tennis, are usually played on natural grass, clay, and carpet surfaces. However, these courts are less preferred these days because they require high maintenance routines that are quite costly. Thus, tennis players go for synthetic playing surfaces to be able to enjoy their hobby without having to worry about the upkeeps.

Steps in Building Synthetic Tennis Courts

If you are fond of do-it-yourself activities, then tennis courts construction would not be a problem for you.

Having your very own synthetic tennis court will give you the opportunity to have fun with your family and friends, without the agony of high maintenance costs. Now, if you want to build your synthetic playing surface yourself, then the following steps can help you:

1. Plan and determine a strategic location. A standard tennis court measures 78-foot by 36-foot rectangle, which is big enough for singles and doubles games. So you should choose a huge, open location to make sure that your synthetic court can be accommodated.

2. Get rid of the old lawn by shoveling the grass, including 1 to 2 inches of top soil, then even the surface using a rake.

3. Spray the whole area with weed and grass killer to prevent unnecessary weeds from growing in your synthetic turf. And to add protection from unwanted plant and weed growth, you can cover the court surface with ground cloth, but be sure that it has the right measurements.

4. Scoop about 2 inches of fill dirt to the tennis court surface and smoothen it with a rake.

5. Place the synthetic turf securely. Some turfs come in large rolls while others are pre-cut into squares. Make sure that the entire court will be covered by the fake grass.

6. Pour the filler sand evenly from corner to corner of the court surface. You can then use a push broom to even the sand and rumple the synthetic turf.

7. Install your tennis net, which may be a portable tennis net system or a permanent one.

8. Invite your friends over to play a game of tennis and have fun!

Now, if you are not so skilful when it comes to installing structures, then it is best to ask for professional help from a reputable company. Marco Bitran: Tennis Acrylic Surfaces: How The Quality Of The Court Affects The Game

By

If you are an athlete or a regular sports enthusiast, then you can probably attest that the quality of a sports surface has a major impact on a game. This is true for most sports, including tennis. But for those who are not sports-oriented, the idea of a tennis court may just include a rectangular surface with specific measurements, a net and then you are good to go. However, whether you are using natural grass courts, tennis acrylic surfaces or synthetic tennis courts, one should also consider the materials being used and the properties of the court because the efficiency and quality of the tennis surface can affect the overall game.

Types of Tennis Courts

There are a lot of expert builders that can design and construct playing surfaces according to your needs. And with the advanced technology today, you can choose from different types of courts. Here are just some of them:

• Grass - These are the fastest type of tennis courts to install and they are made from natural grass that is evened out. The surface is more slippery than hard courts, causing the ball to slide instead of bounce. The bounce of the ball and the outcome of the game will sometimes depend on how often the grass is mowed. So grass courts are quite expensive to maintain, which includes frequent watering and mowing. And besides, these days owners prefer courts made from fake lawn or artificial turf because they are more practical and cost-effective.

• Clay - These courts are usually made from crushed shale or brick, plus rubber and plastics. They are cheaper to construct but the most costly when it comes to maintenance considering the surface is smooth and steady, which needs regular rolling. Clay courts produce high but slow ball bounce, favoring defensive players from the baseline.

• Acrylic or Hard - These courts are the most commonly used for tennis, which are made from concrete, asphalt or plastic. Tennis acrylic surfaces are gives slower performance of players than in grass tennis courts but they are faster compared to the clay ones. The bounce of the ball is more predictable and consistent, making the games more even-handed and fun. You do not even have to worry about regular up-keeps because all you need is a broom or blower to keep these synthetic playing surfaces clean.

Who Can Build Tennis Acrylic Surfaces?

There are numerous tennis court builders out there but you cannot determine the quality of each product. So, you need to look for a company who has the knowledge and skills in tennis court construction. Look for a company that has many years of experience when it comes to tennis acrylic surfaces, artificial turf and other synthetic grass products that you need.
